After a great beginning to his season, Diogo Costa was rewarded with the new deal. His impressive Champions League performances showcased that he is a top goalkeeper, after getting 3 clean sheets in 6 games in Europe's top competition. In Liga Portugal, he has played in all 11 games and only let 8 goals past him. The Portuguese has been with through the club's academy, and joined when he was 11. He made his first full professional debut against Boavista in Liga Portugal in a 1-0 win and has played 84 games since for the current Portuguese Champions. He has also played 7 times for the Portuguese National Team, after making his international debut last season against Qatar in an interntaional friendly, where the team won 3-0.
Costa has been heavily scouted by Manchester United, with the club looking to find a new replacement for David De Gea in case he decides not to extend his contract this summer. With the new contract, Porto have decided to set a new release clause of €75 million according to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, which they will make any club who want Diogo, to pay that fee.
The 22 year-old, said this in a statement to the Porto fans, "I want to thank the president for this moment. The feeling is the same as last year. This is my home and I am one more to help FC Porto to have as many titles as possible. I will always work, I will never change the way l am. For me it is a huge honour to renew my contract with the club of my heart. I have the club looking for goals. That's what we work for individually and collectively. What is there [the gloves with which he defended four penalties in the group stage of the Champions League] is merit of the staff and the entire team. The collective, for me, is the most important. This profession requires responsibility, especially being in a club like this. It's something that's part of life and I'll be here to deal with it naturally."
